01

Growth hormone, in a pill.

MK-677 is the rare growth-hormone booster that works orally. It mimics ghrelin to raise GH and IGF-1 around the clock - which is its appeal and, for some, its drawback, since the elevation is sustained rather than pulsed.

01
Oral and lasting
Raises GH/IGF-1 for ~24 h from a single oral dose.
02
Ghrelin mimic
Activates the same receptor as the injectable secretagogues.
03
Trade-offs
Appetite, water retention and insulin-sensitivity changes are common.

Where the research focuses.

01
GH / IGF-1 elevation

Reliably raises both in humans - its best-documented effect.

02
Muscle & bone

Studied for lean mass and bone density, with mixed functional results.

03
Sleep

Often reported to deepen sleep, consistent with GH-axis effects.

04
Appetite

Increases hunger via ghrelin signalling - sometimes a goal, sometimes not.

04

Sustained, not pulsed.

Unlike the injectable GH peptides that produce brief pulses, MK-677 keeps GH and IGF-1 elevated continuously - useful for convenience but further from the body's natural rhythm.

It was studied extensively by Merck (including in older adults and frailty) but never brought to approval.

05

Strength of the evidence.

Tier 01
Strongest support
  • Sustained GH / IGF-1 elevation in humans
  • Ghrelin-receptor mechanism characterised
Tier 02
Moderate support
  • Bone-density and lean-mass signals
  • Sleep-quality reports
Tier 03
Emerging / unverified
  • Long-term safety
  • A heart-failure signal in one elderly trial

Signs of a quality compound

Lyophilised cake or powder
A fine, fluffy white cake — not oily, clumped or discoloured.
Clear reconstitution
Dissolves to a clear, colourless solution with no visible particles or cloudiness.
Batch-specific COA
Independent HPLC purity and mass-spec identity for the exact lot — not a recycled generic PDF.
Intact seal & vacuum
Sealed flip-top vial under vacuum; correct fill; legible batch and storage marking.
Walk away if…
No COA, oily residue, off-colour, partial vacuum, or purity claims with no independent test behind them.
Suspiciously cheap
Pricing far below the market for a well-tested compound usually means skipped testing or underfilled vials.
Regulatory & status
Well-studied, never approved.

Despite extensive research, MK-677 was never approved for any use and is sold as an investigational research compound. It is prohibited in competitive sport. Water retention and insulin-sensitivity changes are commonly reported.
